I already have the music here, and I’m afraid they are going soft. Since we’ve been wrong is the perfect example of how clear their music is becoming. Not very Omarish of them.
Seja a que título for – ainda que para efeitos meramente estatísticos que coloquem Portugal a par dos índices de licenciados dos outros países europeus que levaram décadas a lá chegar num caldear honesto de quantidade “versus” qualidade – , o ensino superior não pode continuar a ser o escoador sem qualquer ralo de todos os indivíduos saídos do ensino secundário, vitimados ou favorecidos por factores que variam de região para região, de cidade para cidade, de vila para vila e de escola para escola com corpos docentes com níveis de exigência abissalmente díspares.
Não me vou alongar muito sobre este tema, até porque já o fiz no blog anterior, mas aqui fica um artigo onde se defende que as universidades deviam filtrar mais os alunos que recebem. No entanto como recebem um financiamento em função do número de alunos, é normalmente do interesse das mesmas que entrem mais alunos.

Today I gave the presentation of the last project of the semester, so I decided to take the night off (something that I haven’t done in a while) and catch up with the “tosee” folder that is becoming way too overpopulated for my standards.
I started with Once which is a kind-of-musical and I cannot recall who recommend it, but I gave up after 15 minutes. It was just not my thing, maybe except for the “walking the hoover”.
Next I gave Blood, the last vampire a go and I liked. I felt that it was somehow too short, and a very simple storyline. I am in doubt if I should watch Blood+, but it will have to wait since I’m in the middle of the 1990’s X-Men and Escaflowne, Gundam has finished the download and Karas is almost finished. Not to mention that I’m one season behind in 24 and Stargate SG1 will soon arrive. I already have plenty of stuff to survive this summer.
Back to tonight movies and despite have giving up on the first musical, I went for another, this time Dr. Horrible’s sing-along blog. It was a good choice and I really enjoyed the show. Unexpected story and, something rare these days, an unexpected end too.
E uma delas é o facto de existirem pessoas que passam a vida a queixar-se disto e daquilo. Incluí o governo, universidade, etc… Mas quando é para ir votar, esquecem-se, não sabem que estão recenseados, não sabem em que votar1, etc…
Se não sabem da sua situação, podem sempre ir a junta de freguesia informar-se (ou online, como eu fiz). Se não percebem nada de política, está na altura de começarem a perceber. Leiam os sites dos partidos, a wikipédia, vão as universidades, vão às sedes locais dos partidos falar com os vários, etc…
Acho que a política devia fazer parte da formação de qualquer pessoa. Aquelas cadeiras de formação cívica e semelhantes, deveriam ser aproveitadas e apresentar os vários partidos existentes, as diversas ideologias e como funciona a assembleia da república, europeia, etc.. Como funcionam instituições como a EU, a NATO, a ONU, o G8, que tão pouca gente sabe. O pouco que aprendi foi em geografia e era muito miúdo. E contar para a média!
Isso ou outra alternativa seria funcionar como a carta de condução. Depois de fazer os 18 anos não posso conduzir automaticamente, é preciso fazer exame teórico e prático. Ora se com 18 anos tivesse de me ir recensear e esse recenseamento precisasse de um teste generalista sobre os vários partidos e ideologias para ser aprovado, fazia com que todos os que votassem tivessem de saber o mínimo para votarem em consciência.
São apenas algumas ideias para ver se se modifica esta situação.
1 Se não sabem em que votar façam como eu, saquem a lista de programas (e os que não têm online são excluídos). Se não se identificarem com nenhum, votem em branco ,e não nulo, ou não votar, porque os brancos têm significado e contam!
No codebits passado a malta desenvolveu uma ideia para um sistema de rádio online, disponível para vários dispositivos, a que demos o nome CloudStream.
Nunca mais pegámos naquilo, mas é interessante ver que alguém desenvolveu exactamente aquilo que nós apresentámos, apenas com um nome não tão estiloso: BlueTunes.

O filósofo e sociólogo francês Edgar Morin defende uma “reforma radical” do modelo de ensino nas universidades e escolas, salientando a necessidade de passar da actual ‘hiperespecialização’ para uma aprendizagem que “integre as várias áreas do conhecimento”.

A ideia tem bases, mas depois dá-lhe uns toques de filósofo (defendendo a necessidade de criar cursos de conhecimento sobre o próprio conhecimento
). Não devem ser precisos cursos para isso, isso está na atitude das pessoas.
O Luís Abreu mandou vir um Android Developer Phone 1 há um tempo (visto que ainda não está à venda em Portugal) e anda agora a fazer umas reviews ao bicho.
Não fazia ideia que o bicho estava tão bom em termos de software (em hardware é muito mais feio que o meu TyTN) e o vídeo do wikitude está mesmo surpreendente.

The most powerful thing on the internet is the link, that powerful (and yet, so simple) concept that clicking on something (text, image, etc…) will take you to another document. It has powered the Web for so long without any problems until now.
In the age of social media, I find something interesting in twitter, I follow the link to find myself in a friendfeed page with nothing but another link that I follow to a reddit page (with a few comments allright) only then to find the last link that would take me to the real content. This is really annoying, believe me! And I find myself going for this long chains more and more.
You’re replying to a twit of a friendfeed page that comments a redditpage that comments the final link, that is a blog entry and allows comments! So why people don’t comment on the original post? Makes more sense.
What we need is a comment API like disqus or coComment that will store comments for that webpage (even if the page itself doesn’t support comments) and allow access for friendfeed/reddit/hackernews/wtv… Is this full-proof? Not really, but is some way to explore.
There is yet another thing about the “new way of linking” that is really annoying:
It’s not just one topbar, but two! Just like Diggbar, that received the most negative reaction for the webdesign community. And notice how the two bars fuck the design of the page, and move content downwards so it’s out of sight!
I believe the problem is that url shortener services can’t really make money out of it, so they want to use their brand, so they can be later bought by a big company. That topbar is the way they have of showing their logo to the user.
I don’t know about you, but I am not really into accepting such an awful bar when what their provide is a simple script that works as an online hashmap. The best url shortener is invisible.
O plano hoje apresentado por Francisco Louçã, deputado do Bloco de Esquerda, para resolver a situação do BPP prevê o “fecho das portas” do banco e a entrega aos clientes dos produtos de retorno absoluto que subscreveram.
Por acaso alguém me sabe dizer onde é possível encontrar o dinheiro TODO que os clientes lá têm investido? Nenhum banco poderia satisfazer todos os clientes se estes fossem levantar todo o seu dinheiro, muito menos o BPP.
I’ve just watched Quantum of Solace the first one with this new guy as James Bond. I enjoyed the movie, but it was not a 007 movie.

PS: I’m linking to dailymotion since youtube is getting on my nerves for always showing “video not available in your country”. The Internet is global and Google shouldn’t be doing this. I bet they have awesome lawyers that would kick RIAA’s ones.
First Bahnhof and now Tele2, two major ISPs in Sweden, are now deleting their logs after they stop being used by their servers. This decision aims to protect the anonymity of Internet users, but will probably not last long because of a law Sweden has approved to force ISPs to give the logs in cases of copyright infringement.
It makes sense ISPs are trying to help their clients to be anonymous. P2P is the largest slice of the Internet traffic, and the reason many people have more expensive plans (unlimited traffic and higher speeds).
Copyright infringement is a really weak reason to break our privacy. If they were talking about child abuse, pedophilia, it would be easier to understand, but this way we can be sure it’s the music industry lobby playing the Big Brother on us.

My advice to everyone who is interested and can spare the (often substantial) time is: Keep your data in standard, interoperable formats as much as possible, and try out different, unfamiliar operating systems occasionally. It’s easiest to notice the weird negative things, but it’s myopic to assume there’s nothing good to be found. If nothing else, you can learn what doesn’t work for you, and why.

Primeiro, para não pode estar presente e para quem quiser recordar os momentos, serão brevemente lançados os vídeos e pdfs das apresentações. A noção de brevemente vai depender do meu tempo livre para fazer merge do audio, vídeo e respectiva edição (Kudos ao Gaspar e ao Alex por tomarem conta do vídeo e audio respectivamente). Serão lançados no canal disponibilizado para o efeito no Sapo Vídeos e aparecerá no feed do costume.
Em relação às mudanças que fiz este ano, pareceu-me que o painel foi muito bem recebido pela audiência, apesar de ter sido eu a moderá-lo. Em relação a ter mais tempo para o networking, não me parece ter sido notado muito, sobretudo pelo atraso normal das apresentações. Eu bem digo aos oradores que só têm 45 minutos, mas teimam em alongar-se. O Alex até se deu ao trabalho de fazer um gráfico com os tempos.
Finalmente, gostaria de abordar o que me preocupou mais: O facto de depois de duas edições com cerca de 120 pessoas, este ano termos tido sensivelmente metade. Terá sido da data? Realmente não queriamos ter o evento no dia 25 de Abril, mas tivemos de nos ajeitar entre outros eventos (BarcampSpring, OFFF, etc..) e por uma sondagem que fiz, ninguém levantou problemas e quem trabalha ao Sábado mostrou-se agradado pela escolha.
Portanto a culpa foi da minha fraca divulgação. Eu fiz exactamente a mesma divulgação que o ano anterior, tirando os cartazes pela universidade (que não tinham resultado, vem sempre quase tudo de fora) e acrescentei ainda bastantes contactos à lista de emails a spammar. Sinto que foi menos divulgado em blogs e afins (mas surpreendemente tivemos participantes que souberam do evento pelo blog etwit do Sapo). Provavelmente deveria ter pedido mais divulgação nestes meios, mas não faz muito o meu estilo, prefiro que seja espontâneo.
Temos ainda a desculpa suprema, da Crise, que está muito caro a deslocação a Coimbra por um dia. Mas eu não acredito muito nessa.
O André escreveu também sobre este assunto apontando a falta de concretização como um problema dos empreendedores portugueses. De facto nas suas apresentações, o Carlos e o Leo criticaram exactamente isso a partir das suas experiências.
Continuo sem uma resposta exacta ao meu problema, mas poderá ter sido um bocadinho de tudo. Podem ajudar-me, respondendo ao Questionário de Feedback.
Finalmente, um facto curioso: Caíram ali duas raparigas de Comunicação e Marketing um pouco enganadas e acabaram por gostar bastante do evento. Isto faz-me pensar em alargar o público alvo do evento.
I’m a huge believer in scriptable software. Developers should design the core of their apps, with the most-common features, so it works out of the box. If the application is popular, users will ask for features for their particular usage, which makes sense to them, but not only to everybody.
The solution is to make the software extensible and there’s a few ways of doing this. The easiest is open-source the code. In some cases, this might add additional work when new versions come out, but it’s without any doubt, the option that gives more power to the users (or whoever they buy the changes from).
Another option is to allow plugins. This happens when there are bundles of features that make sense together and do not interfere with the core of the application. One good example is the Textmate bundles that extend the application for one language or technology.
Finally there’s another way of extending your application: scripting. This one is chosen when you need to change or add the behavior of your application. Scripting exists from old school editors like vim to full office suites like Microsoft Office (via VBScript).
Take the example of MetaEditor or Textadept, two small apps that have the core basics of an editor, and everything else can be added through small IronPython or Lua scripts. If you have you have a specialized task that only makes sense to you, you can go ahead and script it to increase your productivity.
The scripting ability is not only for programmers, regular users that spend a lot of time with some apps also need that power. There are a lot of companies that live off writing scripts for Microsoft Office and other Corporate Systems. Here in Portugal there is a whole business around a ERP software scripting.
In a recent interview with LifeHacker Woz said he still used Eudora Mail Client because it allowed him to add custom buttons.
Any feature in the menu list, any action there, can be added as a button. I changed it so I have a vertical menu bar, so I can have tons and tons of pre-made buttons saved right where I want them up top, and I learn where those place are. You can script actions to the buttons, too, so I can quickly copy messages to my assistants.
Why isn’t it just built into the operating system?
he later adds. Well, Mac OS X has AppleScript, a way of scripting some applications to change or add some behavior. The problem is that few developers add all of the possibilities to the “manageable actions”. 50% of all the applescripts I’ve used myself have some System Events call to hack into some menu item, or shortcut.
I believe all the OSes should provide a simple ‘scriptable interface’ for programmers to implement, just like they do to GUIs. It would give more power to the users and therefore more satisfaction, as well as create more business opportunities.
